A challenging course where regular performance, intensive training and classroom practice are central to the philosophy of the program.

The course provides an insight into dance as an art form, and as a social and educative experience. In addition to the pursuit of physical excellence, the course develops skills in communication, critical thinking, research and analysis, and demands that students be creatively productive.

The importance of sustainability in relation to professional career pathways is emphasised through engagement with industry partners and exposure to diverse performance environments locally, nationally, regionally and internationally.

Course Learning Outcomes

  • Adapt knowledge and skills in diverse performance contexts to produce creative and innovative ideas in response to industry trends.
  • Apply broad historical, philosophical, theoretical and practical discipline knowledge to a range of professional and associated dance-related contexts.
  • Demonstrate initiative and judgement in planning, problem solving, and decision making when interpreting the intention of choreographic work for professional practice in both solo and collaborative settings.
  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own learning through self-reflection and application of feedback on individual project work in diverse settings.
  • Incorporate techniques and teaching approaches to demonstrate a global outlook and communicate cross-cultural awareness, including indigenous cultural competence.
  • Successfully communicate knowledge and ideas, which incorporate other art forms, including duo and improvisation within a range of choreographic styles and approaches.
  • Think critically to analyse, interpret and conceptualise complex disciplinary knowledge within a choreographic and dance performance context.
  • Use digital technologies and discipline related literacies to access, evaluate and synthesise relevant information from multiple sources.

English Language Requirements accepted: Academic IELTS: An overall band score of 6.0, with no individual band less than 6.0; TOEFL: Minimum score of 550, including Test of Written English of 5 or better; TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 70, with no individual score less than 17; PTE Academic: PTE Academic 52, with no scores less than 50 for courses with a current requirement; University of Cambridge [Cambridge English: Advanced]: Pre-2015: A score between 52 - 57 with no less than 'Borderline' in any element of the test. Post-2015: An overall score of 169, with no individual band less than 169; or a minimum TOEFL score of 550 including TWE of 5.

  • Successfully completed 0.25 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);

  • Aboriginal Student Intake Test; or
  • Experience Based Entry Scheme.

English competency requirements

  • IELTS Academic - Overall band minimum score of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0).
  • Pearson English Test (PTE) Academic - 52 with no scores less than 50.
  • TOEFL iBT - Minimum score of 70, with no individual score less than 17.
  • TOEFL paper-based test (PBT) - Minimum score of 550, including Test of Written English of 5 or better.
  • International Baccalaureate - Higher level English grade 3 (2011) or grade 4 (2012 onwards) or a Standard Level (SL) grade of 4. Can be achieved through IB Certificate or IB Diploma. Note: IB Certificate does not satisfy ECU's minimum academic entry requirements for undergraduate entry
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency (CPE) - An overall minimum score of 169 with no individual band less than 169.
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) - An overall minimum score of 169 with no individual band less than 169.
