Recommended for students with an interest in criminology, social justice and the justice system.

The course provides a comprehensive understanding of the nature of criminology and justice and the principal disciplines of law, political science, psychology and sociology, which inform criminological and justice-related issues.

It adopts a contemporary, international approach to criminology and justice education in developing well-educated practitioners. Students examine the nature of crime and social control, as well as a broad range of areas in the domain of justice, including policing, courts, law, corrections and alternative dispute resolution.

Corrections

Provides students with a unique opportunity to gain valuable knowledge in the criminal justice system, with a focus on offender management.

The major develops students' interpersonal and leadership skills, while building a comprehensive understanding of the theories of offender management and motivational change. Students will develop an appreciation for the complex issues surrounding offender management and how they can work within an environment that seeks to reduce recidivism. The major is relevant to students with an interest in criminology and justice, but also has a wider appeal to social work, psychology, security and other students in the humanities discipline.

Learning Outcomes

  • Adapt knowledge and skills in the review and production of research and/or policy relevant to corrections.
  • Adapt knowledge and skills to work with young people and/or adults in correctional (custodial and non-custodial) settings.
  • Communicate knowledge and ideas, relevant to penology and corrections, to academic, professional and non-professional audiences.
  • Demonstrate a deep and coherent knowledge of legislation and practical requirements to successfully case manage young people and adults in the justice system.
  • Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of theories and research relevant to penology and correctional practice.
  • Demonstrate initiative and judgement in generating and planning evidence-based recommendations for correctional policy and practice.
  • Exercise critical thinking and judgement to recommend practical, ethical and/or legislative solutions to issues in corrections.
  • Review, analyse and synthesise criminological theory and research data relevant to corrections.
  • Take responsibility for own learning and development by reflecting on and evaluating practices, communication styles and performance feedback.

Employment opportunities

The criminal justice system is a popular career path, with employment opportunities in fields such as the court system, government and private prison systems, community-based corrections, and offender treatment programs. Employment opportunities also exist in community services, sociology and youth work, the public and private sector, Government agencies, research and universities, criminology, policy development, intelligence, crime analysis and restorative justice.

Community Corrections Officer, Youth Justice Officer, Prison Officer, Crime Prevention Officer, Victim Support Officer, Policy Development Officer, Researcher, Community Services Officer, Security Services Officer, Intelligence Officer.

Applicants must have obtained minimum of 24 points (minimum of 28 points for Law) consisting of aggregate from 3 higher level and 3 subsidiary level. Minimum grade 3 at higher level for an English subject, or minimum grade of 4 at standard level for an English subject. English Language Requirements accepted: Academic IELTS: An overall band score of 6.0, with no individual band less than 6.0; TOEFL: Minimum score of 550, including Test of Written English of 5 or better; TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 70, with no individual score less than 17; PTE Academic: PTE Academic 52, with no scores less than 50 for courses with a current requirement; University of Cambridge [Cambridge English: Advanced]: Pre-2015: A score between 52 - 57 with no less than 'Borderline' in any element of the test. Post-2015: An overall score of 169, with no individual band less than 169; or a minimum TOEFL score of 550 including TWE of 5.

  • Successfully completed 0.25 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Special Tertiary Admissions Test;

  • Aboriginal Student Intake Test; or
  • Experience Based Entry Scheme.

English competency requirements

  • IELTS Academic - Overall band minimum score of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0).
  • Pearson English Test (PTE) Academic - 52 with no scores less than 50.
  • TOEFL iBT - Minimum score of 70, with no individual score less than 17.
  • TOEFL paper-based test (PBT) - Minimum score of 550, including Test of Written English of 5 or better.
  • International Baccalaureate - Higher level English grade 3 (2011) or grade 4 (2012 onwards) or a Standard Level (SL) grade of 4. Can be achieved through IB Certificate or IB Diploma. Note: IB Certificate does not satisfy ECU's minimum academic entry requirements for undergraduate entry
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency (CPE) - An overall minimum score of 169 with no individual band less than 169.
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) - An overall minimum score of 169 with no individual band less than 169.
