This nationally accredited course provides the opportunity for those with a passion in a particular subject specialisation and the desire to work with young people, to become secondary teachers.

Students study their preferred areas of specialisation concurrent with a suite of core education units that address key educational needs of young people. Students graduating from this course will have the flexibility to take up employment in both private and government secondary schools.

A key feature of the course is an emphasis on the use of Information Technology (IT) in learning and teaching. As well as gaining the professional knowledge needed to successfully incorporate IT into learning programs, teaching students develop their own IT skills, ensuring they are professionally prepared for teaching and have the confidence to promote student learning in new and innovative ways.

Music Education Major

Focuses on classroom music teaching.

Students have the option to complete a minor in instrumental music teaching and conducting/ensemble direction, and can also undertake electives in primary and early childhood music teaching. The major is offered in conjunction with the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and students undertaking this major opt to specialise in either Classical, Jazz or Contemporary music. Under certain circumstances, students may undertake crossover units from other streams.

  • Communicate knowledge and ideas clearly in both written and oral formats.
  • Critically reflect using accredited standards, mentor feedback and the ECA Code of Ethics to demonstrate responsibility and accountability and plan for continued collaborative and autonomous professional learning and development.
  • Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge in depth regarding the Australian curriculum and teaching strategies for secondary music education.
  • Demonstrate leadership, exercise professional judgement and collaborate to plan, problem solve and make decisions in music.
  • Exercise critical thinking and judgement to plan and implement music programs for a range of students with diverse abilities and needs, and assess the outcomes.
  • Review, analyse and synthesise knowledge of teaching strategies to plan for the content of music teaching.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates will be eligible to seek employment in both government and non-government secondary schools teaching Music, and have the option to also work as specialist Kindergarten to Year 6 Music teachers.

Possible future job titles

Secondary Music Teacher, Kindergarten to year 6 Music Specialist Teacher, Specialist Instrumental Teacher.

Applicants must have obtained minimum of 24 points (minimum of 28 points for Law) consisting of aggregate from 3 higher level and 3 subsidiary level.   • Successfully completed 0.25 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);

  • Aboriginal Student Intake Test; or
  • Experience Based Entry Scheme.

Minimum requirements for secondary school results can change, depending on the country where you completed secondary study.

All applicants are required to complete a practical test on their chosen instrument, and complete a short aural/theory test. It is desirable that all applicants have Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) Grade V level of performance, with equivalents considered.

English competency requirements

  • International students must attain an Academic IELTS with an average level of 7.5 or more, across the four components of listening, speaking, reading and writing; no score below level 7.0 in any of these components; and, a score of 8.0 or more in the components of speaking and listening.
  • Pearson English Test (PTE) Academic - 52 with no scores less than 50.
  • TOEFL iBT - Minimum score of 70, with no individual score less than 17.
  • TOEFL paper-based test (PBT) - Minimum score of 550, including Test of Written English of 5 or better.
  • International Baccalaureate - Higher level English grade 3 (2011) or grade 4 (2012 onwards) or a Standard Level (SL) grade of 4. Can be achieved through IB Certificate or IB Diploma. Note: IB Certificate does not satisfy ECU's minimum academic entry requirements for undergraduate entry
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency (CPE) - An overall minimum score of 169 with no individual band less than 169.
