Apa yang akan saya pelajari?

Exclusively for non-native speakers, this program offers five levels of instruction, from Foundations to Advanced levels and ultimately the English for Academic Purposes level. When you complete the program (and pass one General Elective course), you'll receive a General Arts and Science Ontario College Certificate and may apply to other Sheridan programs without further language testing.

Hands-on learning

The ESL program encourages classroom interaction. You’ll work on group projects and assignments that require interaction in the community. You’ll practice speaking and listening in a computerized language lab, and you’ll learn to conduct computer research, note taking and essay writing in English.

English for Academic Purposes

The program’s highest level, English for Academic Purposes (EAP), helps to prepare you to function in an English-speaking college or university environment. At the EAP level, you’ll take one General Education course of your choice for credit in your post-secondary program along with an introductory computer communications course.

Career Opportunities

Students choose the English Language Studies program to enhance their education and employment prospects. At program completion, students have academic and employability skills in areas such as English language proficiency, research, goal setting, conversation management and formal presentations.

Learning Outcomes

The primary objective of the English Language Studies (ESL) program at Sheridan College is to prepare non-native speakers of English to successfully function in an English speaking postsecondary environment. As such, the program aims to:

  • Develop English language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing by having learners engage in a range of communicative tasks and activities from Canadian Language Benchmarks levels 4 to 9.
  • Encourage the use of strategies, such as contextualization of new vocabulary, use of previewing, skimming and scanning techniques, and knowledge of text organization and discourse markers, to aid the comprehension of written and spoken language.
  • Expand the learner’s use of grammatically correct and situationally and culturally appropriate language in speaking and writing for effective communication in a variety of interpersonal and academic situations.
  • Create awareness about learning styles and college resources, encourage the adoption of study skills, and increase competence in the use of technology so that learners may more effectively achieve academic goals.
