Labour studies examines the social, economic and political realities of work. Students explore the past, present and future of the labour movement and the effects of globalization on our daily lives. Social justice and fundamental rights, the way work is organized, the dynamics of power in the workplace, workplace health and safety and the political economy of labour are examined critically. Theory is grounded in practice, as we examine the forces that shape working people’s lives and our responses to them.
This program will be of interest to private and public sector employees, labour union members and officials, employers and industrial relations practitioners who would benefit from a broad, basic, university-based education in labour relations. It’s a program to provide students with understanding and skills to conduct better labour and industrial relations; and to offer courses in a format available to working people.
