The PhD program in Musicology is small and selective, offering advanced students the opportunity for intensive directed research in the areas of expertise of its faculty.
The program emphasizes professional training in research and scholarship for academic careers in musicology. Given the current character of the discipline, the program encourages interdisciplinary work linking scholarship in music with related humanistic fields relevant to the student’s area of research.
Outcomes
Students in this program will develop:
refined skills in music research and bibliography
expertise in contemporary research methodologies, including the role of race, ethnicity, gender, economics and other social issues in the study of music and the construction of musical narratives and historical practices
reinforcement of musical practices and theories across a variety of genres and historical periods
professional development in teaching, course design and research experience across a number of selected areas
professional development in presenting research in peer-review settings
advanced writing skills, including peer-reviewed publication
refined abilities in peer assessment
refined abilities in close-reading, rhetorical analysis and textual criticism
refined presentation abilities (including public speaking and electronic presentation formats)

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): We require a minimum score of 90 from the internet-based TOEFL (IBT). You must also score at least 20 points each in the listening, speaking, reading and writing sections.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System): We require minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS. No individual component can have a score lower than 6.0.
MET (Michigan English Test): A score of 64 on the MET will be accepted as proof of English proficiency.
