Program Overview

Mechanical and Materials Engineering department at Queen’s provides diverse opportunities in fundamental and applied research in all areas of mechanical and materials engineering. We are organized into four main areas of academic study and research. These are:

  • Biomechanical Engineering
  • Energy and Fluid Systems
  • Manufacturing and Dynamic Systems
  • Materials Engineering

The Department is also part of a joint M.Eng. program in Nuclear Engineering (UNENE) with the universities of Waterloo, UWO and McMaster and the Advanced Design and Manufacturing Institute (ADMI) with the universities of McMaster, Toronto, and UWO.


Students have many opportunities for multi-disciplinary, collaborative research with faculty in other departments, other facilities and other universities and in projects throughout the community.

Cross disciplinary aspects include:

  • Fuel Cell Research Centre
  • Human Mobility Research Centre
  • Centre for Advanced Materials & Manufacturing
  • Computational Science & Engineering collaboration.
  • Travel opportunities for fieldwork across Canada and abroad are wide ranging.

Applicants must have hold second-class standing in one of the following degrees awarded by a recognized university: 1) an Honors Bachelor Degree in Arts or Science, 2) a Bachelor Degree in Applied Science or Law 2) a Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent. Other English Language Requirements: TOEFL( Paper Based): 550; MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery): 80; Pearson PTE: Overall score of 65.

Student must have an honours Bachelors degree in Applied Science or Engineering with a B (73-76.9% or GPA 3.0).

English language requirements

Applicants must have TOEFL Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT): The minimum overall score is 88, made up of the minimum scores in each component test as follows: Writing test: 24/30; Speaking test: 22/30; Reading test: 22/30; Listening test: 20/30; MELAB: 80 (minimum overall score); IELTS: 7 (minimum score, academic module); PTE Academic: 65 (minimum overall score).
