The objective of the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Research is to provide the doctoral candidates with

  • A profound familiarity with their field and its social significance
  • An in-depth understanding of the field’s nature, key theories, concepts and research methods, the relation between theory and practice, and the practical applicability of the knowledge attained, as well as the ability to contribute to scientific knowledge
  • Sufficient skills in communication, argumentation and problem-solving, as well as other qualifications for demanding and multidisciplinary research and expert positions in Finland and abroad

The Doctoral Program in Clinical Research (KLTO) is hosted by the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki and belongs to the Doctoral School in Health Sciences. KLTO supports doctoral training in clinical and translational medicine by advancing the expertise and knowledge in the following key areas: epidemiology, etiology, clinical features, diagnostics, treatment and outcome, prevention and prognosis of diseases.

Doctoral research forms the basis for doctoral training in KLTO. The progress of the research work and the doctoral degree is supported by the supervisor, a carefully selected thesis committee, and KLTO. The goal is to complete the doctoral degree (Doctor of Medical Science, Doctor of Dental Science, Doctor of Philosophy, or Doctor of Psychology) within 4 years, net time (full person years spent for the doctoral degree).

KLTO promotes integration of clinical work (e.g. clinical specialist training) with professional research training. The doctoral programme is aimed at training professional clinical researchers and academic scientists in the field of clinical medicine. The objective is to ensure, that enrolled doctoral candidates develop the skills and competences necessary both for professional careers in research and other positions of high expertise. Systematic doctoral training in KLTO aims to guarantee that the society, the universities and different health care units have access to well-trained and internationally competitive experts in different fields on medical research.

The degree structure of the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Research is as follows:

  • Doctoral research in the supervisor’s research group

Field-specific training (30 credits):

  • Methodology and substance training
  • National and international activities and research collaboration
  • Research ethics (compulsory course) - Transferable skills (10 credits)

At the beginning of the training, all doctoral candidates admitted to the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Research will draft a personal study plan in accordance with the degree structure of the programme.

You must hold either a Finnish Master’s degree or a foreign degree that is roughly comparable to a Finnish Master’s degree. A foreign degree is, as a rule, considered comparable when it makes you eligible to apply for doctoral studies in the country where you have completed the degree.

You are able to demonstrate your proficiency in English: IELTS academic minimum score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in the writing section; TOEFL PBT score of 580; TOEFL IBT score of 92, a minimum score of 22 in the writing section; C1 Advanced (formerly CAE): Pass levels A, B or C, C2 Proficiency (formerly CPE): Pass levels A, B, C or level C1 certificate; PTE Academic minimum score of 62, with a minimum score of 54 in each communicative skills section (listening, reading, speaking and writing).
