Economic research requires diverse methodological and theoretical competence.

The Doctoral Programme in Economics has been organised in accordance with international practices:

  • Together with the research study track of the Master’s Programme in Economics, the programme forms a scheme that covers the key areas of competence in the field of modern economics: The basic courses in micro- and macroeconomics and econometrics focus on economic theory and empirical methods; Special courses examine research themes in the relevant fields of specialisation.
  • Optimal dissertation work has an international impact.
  • Students complete their studies in close cooperation with the researcher community of the field.

Research and teaching take place at the Helsinki Center of Economic Research (HECER), which is the joint economics unit of the University of Helsinki, Aalto University and the Hanken School of Economics. Research results are regularly presented in FDPE (Finnish Doctoral Programme in Economics) seminars.

Graduates from the doctoral programme have profound field-specific competence. They are skilled at critical thinking, argumentation and problem-solving. Moreover, the graduates have an independent identity as researchers and experts as well as extensive scientific communication skills.

Graduates from the Doctoral Programme in Economics have the following field-specific skills:

  • A profound knowledge of economic theory and the concepts and methods of econometrics
  • Knowledge of economic literature
  • The ability to examine economic phenomena using scientific methods
  • The ability to communicate and interpret economic results
  • The ability to assess and systematically improve personal scientific competence

Students can complete a doctoral degree in four years of full-time study. The degree includes:

  • A personal study plan
  • Field-specific studies (30 cr), including research ethics
  • General competence studies (10 cr), e.g. university pedagogy, leadership, management, negotiation and project skills and scientific communication
  • International mobility, e.g., research cooperation or participation in international conferences
  • A doctoral dissertation

Career prospects

The Doctoral Programme in Economics prepares students for positions requiring pre-eminent economic expertise in universities, research institutes, international organisations, financial institutions and the public sector.

You must hold either a Finnish Master’s degree or a foreign degree that is roughly comparable to a Finnish Master’s degree. A foreign degree is, as a rule, considered comparable when it makes you eligible to apply for doctoral studies in the country where you have completed the degree.

You are able to demonstrate your proficiency in English: IELTS academic minimum score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in the writing section; TOEFL PBT score of 580; TOEFL IBT score of 92, a minimum score of 22 in the writing section; C1 Advanced (formerly CAE): Pass levels A, B or C, C2 Proficiency (formerly CPE): Pass levels A, B, C or level C1 certificate; PTE Academic minimum score of 62, with a minimum score of 54 in each communicative skills section (listening, reading, speaking and writing).
