The general objective of the doctoral programme is to provide doctoral candidates with

  • A profound familiarity with their field and its social significance
  • An in-depth understanding of the field’s nature, key theories, concepts and research methods, the relation between theory and practice, and the practical applicability of the knowledge attained, as well as the ability to contribute to scientific knowledge
  • Sufficient skills in communication, argumentation and problem-solving, as well as other qualifications for demanding and multidisciplinary research and expert positions in Finland and abroad.

The identity, mission and function of dental medicine are unique. This field of science includes a wide variety of clinical and non-clinical academic fields of research. FINDOS Helsinki offers an excellent working environment, where young dental researchers will get all the necessary guidance and support to develop into the future’s academic dentists.

The main research areas in the FINDOS programme are:

  • Dental, facial and skull development and growth, and its genetic regulation
  • Controlled tissue generation and bioresorbing material
  • Stomatognathic and its pathological conditions
  • Oral Infections and their mechanisms
  • Oral health care
  • Cancer biology
  • Oral implements and systemic diseases

FINDOS Helsinki belongs to the Doctoral School in Health Sciences (DSHealth). It has doctoral candidates from two different faculties: Faculty of Medicine, and Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences. The host faculty is the Faculty of Medicine. The research groups of FINDOS Helsinki have research laboratories in Biomedicum Helsinki at the Meilahti campus and in the Institute of Biotechnology at the Viikki campus.

The degree structure of the Doctoral Programme in Oral Sciences is as follows:

  • Doctoral dissertation in a research group led by the thesis supervisor
  • Substance-specific training (30 credits) - Methodology and substance training; National and international research cooperation; Research ethics
  • Transferable skills (10 credits)

At the beginning of the training, all doctoral candidates admitted to the Doctoral Programme in Oral Sciences will draft a personal study plan in accordance with the degree structure of the programme.

The doctoral programme aims to ensure the availability of well-trained and internationally competitive experts in dental science to society, universities and health care units. You must hold either a Finnish Master’s degree or a foreign degree that is roughly comparable to a Finnish Master’s degree. A foreign degree is, as a rule, considered comparable when it makes you eligible to apply for doctoral studies in the country where you have completed the degree.

You are able to demonstrate your proficiency in English: IELTS academic minimum score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in the writing section; TOEFL PBT score of 580; TOEFL IBT score of 92, a minimum score of 22 in the writing section; C1 Advanced (formerly CAE): Pass levels A, B or C, C2 Proficiency (formerly CPE): Pass levels A, B, C or level C1 certificate; PTE Academic minimum score of 62, with a minimum score of 54 in each communicative skills section (listening, reading, speaking and writing).
