Energy is the biggest challenge of mankind. It is the basic prerequisite of any industrial activities, necessity for the functioning of human communities and, due to fertilizers and agricultural machines, the necessary requirement for food production. As the population grows and living standard of people around the world gets higher, also the demand of energy is drastically increased. At the same time, our planet is colliding with its limits. The climate change is accelerated, which compels us to cut carbon dioxide emissions drastically. Raw materials are depleted, which makes us to renew our industrial base and to develop the recycling economy.

To meet the above challenges, today, around the world, there is a radical transition towards sustainable energy, which combines smartness, flexibility and environmental performance with customer acceptance and engagement. New energy system will be a complex combination of central and local resources, including production, storages and new, efficient and flexible loads. This calls for new thinking of primary energy sources, energy production, energy markets, energy transmission, energy use and customers as producer-consumers (prosumers). To enable this transition, a multi-disciplinary approach is needed that combines several views of the energy system through the whole chain from primary energy resources till efficient energy use. Key factors in the implementation of sustainable energy future are digitalization, new thinking in the energy markets and conversion of passive energy users to active prosumers. In the energy demand side, a massive transformation is being made towards intelligent and energy efficient buildings and communities as well as intelligent and electrified transportation.

The purpose of this Master´s programme is to educate a new generation of people to face these vast challenges and to implement the radical changes needed in our societies. The students graduating will be provided with a solid basic understanding of energy sources, energy utilization and energy systems, with the specialization of some key area of development needed for our sustainable energy future.

Structure of the Degree

The Master of Science (Technology) degree is 120 ECTS credits. Major studies (65 cr) consists of

  • 15 cr of common studies shared by all majors of the Advanced Energy Solutions programme
  • 15 cr of major-specific common studies
  • 35 cr of advanced studies.

Common courses give the student a basic understanding of the field. Specialisation is built mainly through advanced studies, where students may choose courses from different topic groups.

Elective studies (25 cr) are chosen entirely by the student. The master’s thesis (30 cr) concludes the degree.

Career Prospects

The student is capable of acting as an expert of in at least one of the following, depending on the chosen major: new power and energy systems and markets, advanced energy and power production technologies, building and communal energy design and use, bioenergy or industrial energy processes.

Typical employers are energy companies, energy-intensive industries, engineering and consultant companies as well as universities and research institutes. The graduates will able to apply novel, adaptive and socially intelligent thinking and enhance interdisciplinary collaboration with well-trained project management skills for entrepreneurship initiatives concerning energy solutions.

The following background knowledge is required for major “Sustainable Energy Systems and Markets”. This knowledge is typically obtained by studying a Bachelor degree at a research university with Energy Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation, Control Engineering or Natural Sciences as Physics or Mathematics as a major subject.
