Programme Aims
The programme aims to train and produce independent researchers with state-of-the-art expertise who can create original knowledge through innovative research.
Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)
Upon successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:
1. achieve general intellectual proficiency and specialization in their chosen subject areas;
2. apply appropriate research methodology/tools to conduct independent research;
3. formulate and derive effective, innovative and original solutions to fundamental problems in their chosen subject areas;
4. communicate effectively with the learned community about the research process and findings;
5. create new knowledge through in-depth investigation of the chosen subject areas.
Research Area(s) in which research students will be admitted to:
Applied Mathematics; Electronic Engineering; Environmental Science, Energy and Built Environment; Life Sciences (Biomedical Science, Molecular Science) and Biomedical Engineering; Materials Science and Applied Physics; or Mechanical Engineering and Sustainable Manufacturing.
Thesis:
Each student is required to submit a well written thesis to complete the PhD programme of studies.
The thesis must be a scholarly piece of work that can adequately demonstrate the student’s:
1) competence in the application of research methodology and tools to undertake an independent scientific enquiry;
2) in-depth knowledge and understanding of the chosen research area; and
3) contribution to the creation of new knowledge in the chosen research area.
In addition, the thesis should also exhibit more than one of the following characteristics:
4) displays a high level of critical understanding and intellectual accomplishment of the chosen research area
5) makes substantial academic contribution to knowledge
6) makes substantial innovative contribution to professional practices
7) publishable in the mainstream research or professional journals
The submitted thesis will be examined by a panel of examiners.

Equivalent qualifications mentioned above include relevant professional qualifications or other scholarly achievements recognised by the University.
Applicants from an institution where the language of teaching is not English should satisfy the minimum English proficiency requirements specified by both the University and individual Colleges and Schools.
