The Master of Arts in Chinese (MAC) programme equips students with an advanced knowledge and deep understanding of Chinese literature and the Chinese language. The Master of Arts in Chinese programme also builds the skills in research and writing required for further development.

Combination of Chinese history and culture

Chinese literature has a long history, showing a colorful rich face. In recent time, the hot topic of "One Belt, One Road" mentions this title much. The Master of Arts in Chinese programme contains elements of aesthetics, history and culture, to inspire the students with the concern of the classical and modern literature.

Career and study advancement opportunities for media and publishing professionals

The programme is designed for Chinese language and literature lovers who want to advance their careers, progress to a higher level of postgraduate study, or simply broaden their knowledge and understanding of classic and modern literature, says Professor Chan Wai-ying, Programme Director of the Master of Arts in Chinese programme at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. The programme also enables students to master Chinese-language copywriting and creative writing skills.

Lingnan University is an institution renowned for its liberal arts education. “The department of Chinese at Lingnan has identified key knowledge areas in classical and modern literary studies, and is also known for its strength in literary research and creative writing,” Chan says. “The programme focuses on increasing the adaptability, intellectual strength, and creativity of the students. One of our objectives is to give those in the media, or the publishing industry, the opportunity to pursue a postgraduate degree which will help to advance their careers. The content of our programme is continuously being updated to adapt to the changing environment in the outside world,” says Chan.

The Master of Arts in Chinese programme covers more than just Chinese literature. It offers a wide range of compulsory and elective courses which include disciplines like literary criticism, creative writing, film studies, and Chinese opera. The research methodology is geared to hone the students’ theoretical and practical capabilities.

Welcoming students who love and respect the arts

“The Master of Arts in Chinese programme is designed to teach students exemplary research skills. This way, students can showcase their work, and demonstrate their unique personalities and capabilities. This affects the wider sphere of Hong Kong life, as these students will have the ability to rejuvenate the creative power of our society,” says Chan. “We continuously encourage our students to develop critical and creative thinking processes, and we encourage them to view our society in new ways.

“The Master of Arts in Chinese programme attracts students from Hong Kong and abroad, including the mainland,” says Chan. “Students from the mainland have told us how impressed they are by the design of the programme. The course has a different approach to other Chinese studies programmes, and takes in more dimensions,” Chan says. “We will keep improving the quality of the course content. We will also continue to invite well-known professors and writers to participate in events, and teach our students.” Chan says.

Learning in and out of the classroom

The postgraduate course, which is taught in Cantonese and Putonghua at the Lingnan University, requires students to complete 24 credits – two compulsory and five elective modules – to graduate. Most modules are taught in a lecture and tutorial format.
