The programme aims to train and produce graduates who can contribute to the extension of knowledge in their chosen subject areas, preparing them for advanced research at the PhD level or professional careers in science and engineering.

Upon successful completion of this Programme, students should be able to:

1. master the content and methods of their chosen subject areas;
2. apply appropriate research methodology/tools to conduct independent research;
3. formulate and carry out applied research in their chosen subject areas;
4. communicate effectively with the learned community about the research process and findings;
5. contribute to knowledge through the process of applied research.

Research Area(s) in which research students will be admitted to:

Applied Mathematics; Electronic Engineering; Environmental Science, Energy and Built Environment; Life Sciences (Biomedical Science, Molecular Science) and Biomedical Engineering; Materials Science and Applied Physics; or Mechanical Engineering and Sustainable Manufacturing.

Qualifying/Annual Report Submission:

Students are required to submit qualifying report and annual report in compliance to the regulations or guidelines as set by the School of Graduate Studies (SGS). Such regulations and guidelines are accessible via the guidebook located at SGS website.

Thesis:

Each student is required to submit a well written thesis to complete the MPhil programme of studies.

The thesis must be a substantial piece of work that can adequately demonstrate the student’s:
1) competence in the application of research methodology and tools to undertake an independent scientific enquiry;
2) in-depth knowledge, understanding of the chosen research area; and
3) contribution to the extension of existing body of knowledge in the chosen research area.
