Apa yang akan saya pelajari?

The Master of Professional Counseling in Monash University Malaysia is a skills-based course suited to those with an interest in counseling. It is taught by academics with extensive experience of working as professional counselors/psychologists.

This course is designed to prepare students to become registered counselors in settings such as community mental health, schools, health centers, workplaces, and in private practice. The course is also suitable for people already working in various professions who may wish to utilize counseling skills in roles such as teaching, social work and human resources. A distinctive feature of the course is its focus on preparing students to be culturally competent counselors in Malaysia and the region.

This course requires students to undertake 504 hours of clinical placements, including a minimum of 192 hours of client contact. Through these mandatory placements, students have an opportunity to apply theory to practice under supervision in clinical settings.

Expected course outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course it is expected that graduates will be able to:

  • demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge of evidence-based theories and frameworks related to the major schools of counselling and psychotherapy
  • relate appropriate therapeutic approaches and strategies to the corresponding developmental stages across childhood, adolescence, adulthood and ageing
  • demonstrate capacity in synthesising and communicating ideas at an advanced academic level
  • demonstrate cultural awareness and sensitivity in all aspects of professional counselling
  • develop a deeper understanding of self, personal values and preferred styles of counselling
  • assess clients both formally and informally through individual, family, group and career counselling
  • apply the knowledge and skills developed in counselling practice in a workplace setting
  • recognise the ethical and professional issues in counselling and psychology
  • demonstrate knowledge of appropriate research approaches and apply research and evaluation skills in the contexts of research, report writing, case notes and referrals.

Career opportunities

On completion of the course, graduates should be able to work as counsellors with an advanced level of knowledge, and be cognisant of the professional issues involved in undertaking counselling as a profession in Malaysia and the region. Graduates would be able to work in settings such as community mental health clinics, schools, health centers, workplaces, and in private practice.

Applicants must have completed a recognized Australian bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent qualification, with a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 55. English Language Requirements: IELTS (International English Language Testing System – academic test) - minimum test score of 6.5 overall; at least 6.0 in each individual band; Paper-based TOEFL (American Test of English as a Foreign Language) - minimum test score of 550; Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5; Internet-based TOEFL (American Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 79 overall writing score of at least 21, speaking score of at least 18, reading score at least 13, listening score of 12; PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) overall test score: 58.

Students should have successfully completed a recognised bachelor degree or equivalent qualification with credit average (60%), submit referee reports (two academics) and must attend an interview.

They also must meet the IELTS minimum overall test score of 6.5 with individual band scores not less than 6 or an internet-based TOEFL score of 79 overall with minimum scores of:

  • Speaking 18
  • Writing 21 or paper-based TOEFL score of 550 overall with Test of Written English (TWE): 4.5.
