The two-year master's in applied physics / physics is taught in English and starts in September and February.

During our master's degree in Applied Physics you expand your knowledge about physics and choose a research area to delve into. You can tailor your training based on your personal interests. Our faculty of Applied Sciences, of which the Applied Physics course is a part, is one of the best in the world; you benefit from ultramodern high-tech laboratories and excellent facilities, such as the renowned MESA + Institute for Nanotechnology , the Technical Medical Center and the Max Planck Center for Complex Fluid Dynamics. Partly thanks to the presence of this kind of leading research centers, education and research in this study program are strongly linked.

Five research clusters

At Applied Physics we strive for the ideal balance between 'hardcore' physics and engineering. The research is divided into five clusters, which together reflect what today's world needs:

  • Physics of Fluids
  • Nanoelectronic Materials
  • Nanophotonics applied
  • Soft Matter
  • Energy Materials and Systems

The themes dealt with within the study program fit in well with these five research clusters.

The first year

In the first year of this master's degree you follow four general basic physics subjects that relate to physics theory, mathematical techniques, applied physics and experimental physics. Together these compulsory courses cover the entire scope of the program. The four subjects are divided over the four quartiles. The advantage is that you and your fellow students see each other regularly throughout the first year. A third of the year consists of those four courses that are compulsory for everyone, a third is specialization with electives (each chair has one compulsory course and a number of recommended courses), and a third is free choice.

The second year

The second year is the practical year. You can fill it in with fundamental science, for example doing research in a research group and doing an internship at a reputable research institute. But you can also opt for much more engineering-oriented research and an internship at a company. In addition, we offer the possibility to make your internship a little larger than the 20 EC (three months) that are normally offered. Practice shows that large companies in particular consider an internship of six months the minimum. With such a longer internship, we must of course make good agreements with you about the planning.

Career perspectives

As a technical physicist you can go in any direction. For example, you can focus on a career in research, management or production.
