The world shows manifest differences in economic performances and wealth, and in the way cities and regions form part of national and global economic systems. Economic geography studies these differences and their consequences for places and communities.

Master's specialisation Economic Geography: something for you?

Our approach is highly multidisciplinary to include related fields as sociology, spatial planning, public administration and history.
You will receive a thorough training in analytical approaches to study local-global interaction.
We will draw from mainstream as well as more alternative economic perspectives.
You will take part in fundamental discussions on globalisation, spatial inequality, innovation and the future of the capitalist system.

What will you learn?

The world economy has become more globalised, more integrated and more competitive. In this Master's you will study the relations between business activities and spatial development in view of a globalising, and increasingly networked world economy. You will be introduced to mainstream and alternative perspectives on business location, networking and urban and regional development. This is followed by in-depth courses on city marketing and relational geography, and by research activities focusing on local-global links of business, governments and other organisations.

Career prospects

The Master's specialisation in Economic Geography provides graduates entry into rapidly growing sectors of the job market, be it government, business or academia. Graduates will be able to apply the scientific insights and practical skills acquired to topics as varied as local behaviour of firms, business relations, phenomena of industrial agglomeration and economic clustering, the pivotal role of the state, local and global culture, and policymaking at various spatial levels.

With expertise gained during this Master’s, a graduate can be employed in a wide range of jobs, both in and outside the Netherlands, for example:

At a consultancy and advisory firms, as a consultant or advisor, writing Strategic Plans for the sustainable development of regions and cities, helping foreign firms and investors to find a suitable location, or assisting regional and city governments in getting and managing EU funds (project and process management)
At a Spatial or Economic Development department of a city municipality, where you could be responsible for the planning of industrial zones, the upgrading of city centres, the attraction of new firms and investments, or for getting European Union funds.
At provincial governments and new spatial-governmental entities such as city-regions
At ministries: in the Dutch context, you can think of ‘Economische Zaken’, ‘VROM’, ‘Verkeer en Waterstaat’, ‘Binnenlandse Zaken’ and ‘LNV’.
At a Chamber of Commerce, Regional Development Agency, and Innovation Platform to provide (starting) entrepreneurs with a wealth of information about rules, subsidies, regional labour markets and innovation policies, as well as setting up (informal) networks of key actors in a region.
At for example employers’ organisations, labour unions and housing corporations as an expert in themes such as immigrant entrepreneurship, the ‘Creative Economy’, and sustainability

A completed Bachelor's degree. A proficiency in English: In order to take part in the programme, you need to have fluency in English, both written and spoken. Non-native speakers of English* without a Dutch Bachelor's degree or VWO diploma need one of the following: TOEFL score of 575 (paper based) or 90 (internet based); IELTS score of 6.5, Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), with a mark of C or higher.

In order to get admission to this Master's you will need a completed Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent, from a research university) from a geography-related discipline, such as Spatial Planning, Geography, Environment Studies.

For students with a completed Bachelor's degree (or equivalent, from a research university) in a related area such as International Relations, Social Sciences, Anthropology, Psychology, History, Philosophy, Religion Studies, European Studies, Political Science, Public Administration, Economics, Development Studies, Language Studies, Architecture, (Urban) Design Studies, Leisure and Tourism, Conflict Studies and Management Sciences your prior education might first needs to be approved by the examination Board in order to enroll in the study programme.

All other students need one of the following certificates (All certificates may not be older than two years):

TOEFL iBT: ≥ 90 & subscores ≥ 22
IELTS Academic: ≥ 6,5 overall. Subscores ≥ 6,0, writing subscore ≥ 6,5
Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 proficiency: C or higher
