The Life Science and Science Communication and Society master's specialisation focuses on the interaction between science and society.

What does this master’s programme entail?

Increasingly, the general public wants to be and needs to be informed about scientific topics. At the same time, scientists need to show accountability to the general public about their research. In this specialisation you bridge the gap between experts and the public by combining high quality research in life sciences with extensive training in science communication. After completion you have obtained the necessary knowledge and skills to either become science communicator with a strong LST background, or a researcher with a communicating mindset.

The Master of Science programme guarantees thorough research training founded on a sound theoretical basis. After graduating you will have excellent knowledge of Life Sciences and highly developed research skills. Moreover you have obtained the skills and knowledge to apply your LST background to SCS careers. Some examples of career at the interface of science and public affairs are: science writer, science policymaker, public relations officer or research scientist with particular communication skills.

Career

The master’s degree Life Science and Technology is a stepping-stone for those graduates with the aspiration to pursue a PhD degree. Students with a desire to apply their life sciences and technology knowledge outside the university have good job possibilities in R&D departments in industry, business, public utility companies, teaching, consultancy and government bodies. Biotechnological-, food- and biopharmaceutical industries as well as healthcare and fundamental research institutions could be suitable employers. Many students eventually attain higher management positions.

You are eligible to apply if you have

A BSc degree in Life Science and Technology (LST) from any research university in the Netherlands. OR

A bachelor’s degree in a Life Science and Technology-related programme from a research university in the Netherlands, under the condition that you have

  • accumulated at least 150 EC in courses/projects belonging to the domain of Life Science and Technology, and
  • obtained the degree with an average final grade of at least 7.0, and
  • a research project/internship grade of at least 7.5

Entry requirements for students from a foreign research university

If you have a bachelor’s degree in a Life Science and Technology- related programme from a foreign research university with a level similar to Dutch universities, you are eligible to apply under the condition that you have

  • accumulated at least 150 EC (or the equivalence thereof) in courses/projects belonging to the domain of Life Science and Technology, and
  • obtained the degree with an average final grade of at least 7.0 (Dutch grading system),
  • and a research project/internship grade of at least 7.5

In order to successfully participate in this programme, you must be proficient in English. The following requirements apply*:

  • IELTS: minimum 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 for each of the components Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking
  • TOEFL: internet based 90 (with a minimum component score of 20)
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE), minimum grade C
