Data is at the core of modern society. We are producing it, collecting it, wrangling it, analysing it, modelling it, understanding it, visualising it, using it on a scale that seemed impossible not so long ago. Data Science is fundamentally about how we can learn from data and how we can meaningfully use it to improve our world. Studying Data Science leads to opportunities in fields as diverse as banking and biotechnology, entertainment and education, gaming and government, medicine and manufacturing, retail and research. Data Science is also a broad area of study. At Otago, the Data Science programme pulls together the best that computer science, information science, and statistics have to offer while stressing application and understanding of the impact of Data Science on society.

Entry into the BSc (BSc) in Data Science is open to anyone, however taking Digital Technology for NCEA is useful and NCEA Level 3 Mathematics and Statistics is helpful.

English language requirements

IELTS (Academic module) (including IELTS Online) - Overall score of 6.0, no individual band below 5.5.
TOEFL iBT - Overall score of 80 and a writing score of 20.
C1 Advanced (previously Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)) or C2 Proficiency (previously Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE)) - Overall score of 169 (with no individual band below 162)
Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic - Overall score of 50 with no communicative skills score below 42.
LanguageCert - International ESOL: C1 Expert (LRWS) with a pass overall and no less than a pass in each skill
NZCEL - NZCEL 4 Academic endorsement
English New Zealand's Accredited Pathway Assessment - Assessment Level 2 (with no skill lower than Level 1)
APIEL Advanced Placement International English Language Examination - Grade 3 or higher
