If you want to get into the Electrical Industry and work on safe electrical installations and equipment, then the New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Engineering Theory (Level 3) is for you. This pre-apprenticeship qualification will prepare you for the industry and teach you all the fundamentals that you will need to know.

You will learn to work with all kinds of electrical systems and equipment and learn about:

  • The principles of electrical theory and practice,
  • Electrical protection,
  • Installation and maintenance.
  • Fault diagnosis and testing techniques
  • Safe working procedures and practices
  • Identifying and reporting electrical and other hazards.

Graduates of this qualification are not electricians but will have an operational and theoretical knowledge of electricity production, distribution, and utilisation, and can carry out a limited range of prescribed electrical work safely and ethically under general supervision in accordance with the Electricity Act 1992.

Career Opportunities:

Many of our graduates gain full-time employment in the electrical trade. They have completed apprenticeships and are now registered electricians.

Graduates will be equipped with the skills, knowledge, and attributes to work in apprenticeships in the electrical industry in the field of their choice with guidance, mentoring, and supervision in accordance with the Electricity Act 1992.
Examples of roles that this qualification may lead to are Electricity Supply Electrical Apprentice, Domestic/Commercial Electrical Apprentice, or Industrial Electrical Apprentice, or apprenticeships in other electrical related sectors.
Graduates may also be able to work in areas such as electrical wholesaling or retailing as a counter sales person, or electrical meter readers

Satisfactory Completion:

To satisfactorily complete New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Engineering Theory (Level 3) and be awarded this qualification the student must have successfully: -

  • Achieved all of the graduate outcomes in the graduate profile showing competence to a minimum of 120 credits in accordance with the programme schedule for the New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Engineering Theory (Level 3).
  • Completed required practical and theoretical course work and assignments.
  • Hold a current First Aid certificate at the completion of the programme (this is not included in the programme but is a qualification requirement)
  • The student will normally be expected to complete the New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Engineering Theory (Level 3) full-time over 34 tutorial weeks or part-time over 2 years.

Applicants under 20 years:

  • Candidates must have achieved the NCEA Level 1 or equivalent in Mathematics, English, and Physics or General Science, or equivalent qualifications.
  • Desire to work in the Electrical Engineering industry

Applicants over 20 years:

  • Applicants over the age of 20 years at time of enrolment will be considered where they can demonstrate the ability to succeed in a programme. Examples of demonstration of ability to succeed are the provision of evidence of successful completion of a programme of study at Level 1 or above in a related discipline, and/or employment in the related sector for one or more years.

Language Requirements

  • IELTS test - General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5
  • TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 500 (with an essay score of 4 TWE)
  • TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) - Score of 35 (with a writing score of 14)
  • Cambridge English Examination - B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 154. No less than 154 in each skill.
  • OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
  • NZCEL - a) Expiring Level b) Current: a) Level 3 (General) or (Workplace) b) Level 3 (General)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE (Academic) score of 36 with no band score lower than 36
  • Language Cert - B1 Achiever IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than PASS in each skill
  • Trinity ISE - ISE I with no less than distinction in any band
