The purpose of this qualification is to produce graduates who have attained sufficient Information Systems (IS) skills to proceed to further study or be employed in an entry-level IS role. Graduates who have attained a New Zealand Diploma in Information Systems Level 5 will have the technical skills and knowledge to apply for entry-level roles such as a Junior Software Developer or Junior Business Analyst. This qualification leads to the second year of studying towards a New Zealand Diploma in Software Development Level 6.

WHAT IS A JUNIOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPER?

Software developers develop, test and maintain computer software, websites and software applications. They also prepare the documentation of users and business requirements as well as reports on software testing analysis. They assist their team in each part of the Software Development Life Cycle. The Level 5 Diploma in Information Systems is designed to help our learners gain the working knowledge and basic understanding of Data Modelling and Software Development. It’s perfect for anyone wanting to become a Junior Software Developer.

Following this one year New Zealand diploma course you will be able to:

  • Learn to code in C# using Visual Studio and deploy simple working applications.
  • Design and develop for the web using HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript and the Bootstrap framework
  • Develop user-friendly applications using UI and UX concepts
  • Implement business process and data management using SQL
  • Write technical documentation for professional environments
  • Implement project management using Software Development Life Cycle
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot common computer problems
  • Apply business ethics and professionalism in information technology
  • Implement hardware and networking configuration.

Education Pathways
This qualification provides a pathway to a Level 6 specialist IT qualification. This may include:

  • New Zealand Diploma in Networking (Level 6) [Ref: 2600]
  • New Zealand Diploma in Systems Administration (Level 6) [Ref: 2601]
  • New Zealand Diploma in Database Administration (Level 6) [Ref: 2602]
  • New Zealand Diploma in Information Systems with strands in Business Analysis, User Experience, IT Project Management, Information Systems Innovation (Level 6) [Ref: 2603]
  • New Zealand Diploma in Software Development (Level 6) [Ref: 2604]

Other intended pathways include undergraduate degree qualifications. This qualification may also equip learners to attempt optional industry certifications at the appropriate level and area of speciality. This qualification provides an education pathway from:

  • NCEA Level 2 or 3
  • New Zealand Certificate in Computing (Intermediate User) (Level 3) [Ref: 2592]
  • New Zealand Certificate in Computing (Advanced User) (Level 4) [Ref: 2593]
  • New Zealand Certificate in Information Technology Essentials (Level 4) [Ref: 2594]
  • New Zealand Certificate in Information Technology (Level 5) [Ref: 2595] Graduates of Ref: 2595 may be granted credit recognition toward this qualification.

Learners enrolling are recommended to hold one of the following qualifications, or equivalent knowledge, skills and experience.

• NCEA Level 2 or 3
• New Zealand Certificate in Computing (Intermediate User) (Level 3)
• New Zealand Certificate in Computing (Advanced User) (Level 4)
• New Zealand Certificate in Information Technology (Level 5)

Proof of English Language status (IELTS or TOEFL test results, or evidence that your medium of instruction has been English)
