Apa yang akan saya pelajari?

The master’s programme in Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology aims to provide a deep understanding of how to design and operate state-of-the-art life science based processes, with respect to product quality, sustainability and finance. The goal is to use cells and cell components such as enzymes in order to produce commodities such as food, paper and pulp, biofuel and biomaterials for a sustainable society.

Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology at KTH

The two-year programme comprises advanced courses regarding biotechnological tools used for the development of industrial processes, sustainable production of commodities and the impact of such processes on the environment and the society. The programme offers a comprehensive education to tackle societal challenges enabling students to prepare for careers in Sweden or internationally.

The program syllabus offers three tracks: cell-based process biotechnology, enzyme biotechnology and environmental biotechnology. The student shall complete all courses within one track. In addition, the student will tailor their education by combing their choice with a second track either of this programme, or any of the two tracks at the master’s programme in Medical Biotechnology. It is also possible to cherry pick courses from any track to create one’s own unique professional profile.

The tracks are designed to provide a holistic perspective on the particular biotechnology field. Courses comprise both theoretical knowledge and practical application from experimental design, to production, analysis of the output, and performing life cycle analyses of the produced entity. The curriculum provides a cross-platform approach to enable students to acquire a unique and individualised expertise that appeal to a wide span of employers. Students train problem-solving skills, project management as well as professional communication. The programme curriculum is designed, taught and continuously updated by a team of internationally recognised researchers within the different subject areas.

Degree project

A master's degree project is carried out during the last term of the programme where the student work on a research topic related to the theoretical courses in the curriculum. The project may be carried out either in a research setting at KTH, in industry or in another university or research institute anywhere in the world.

This is a two year programme (120 ECTS credits) given in English. Graduates are awarded the degree of Master of Science. The programme is given mainly at KTH Campus in Stockholm by the School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health (at KTH).

Career

Graduates of the programme will acquire the skills necessary for a professional career in the biotechnology industry, as well as those for further academic studies. These areas are expanding worldwide, offering anyone with a master’s degree in Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology vast career opportunities, including those found in patent and consultant agencies and finance.

After graduation

Research Scientists, Sales Representative, Field Application Specialist, QC Scientists, Project Manager, Science Communicator, Laboratory Manager, Operation Developer, Patent Analyst, Research Associate.
