The programme aims to provide in-depth knowledge of molecular systems and advanced tools for successful careers in industry, academia, and society. The focus is on the molecular design, characterisation, and applications of molecular structures and materials, and also includes aspects of innovation, environmental issues, sustainability and safety.

Molecular Science and Engineering at KTH

The two-year master’s programme in Molecular Science and Engineering provides the students with a broad background in chemistry as well as a deeper knowledge in some chosen areas. A wide range of topics is covered, including molecular structure, synthesis of molecules, material properties, quantum chemistry, molecular reactions, and surface chemistry, and you will also become acquainted with a number of advanced analytical techniques. In addition, you will carry out project work and teamwork, as well as practicing your written and oral communication. The opportunities to do coursework or to complete the degree project abroad are good, and there are a large number of foreign universities in different countries to choose between. The programme is strongly linked to the activities at the School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health, and especially the Department of Chemistry. Thus, you will come in direct contact with research performed at KTH. Moreover, the programme deals with real-world challenges such as considerations of energy, safety, environment, ethics, sustainability, and human rights in chemical industries, research, and society.

The programme involves choosing from an extensive selection of courses followed by a degree project. There is considerable freedom and an opportunity to create a personalised curriculum, focusing on individual areas of interest and allowing for a degree that is both fundamentally strong and specialised.

Examples of specialisations include the following profiles:

  • Theoretical chemistry and molecular modeling
  • Organic and biological chemistry

  • Surface chemistry and surface-active materials

Other specialisations may be designed, where guidelines and recommendations for course combinations will be given.

This is a two year programme (120 ECTS credits) given in English. Graduates are awarded the degree of Master of Science. The programme is given mainly at KTH Campus in Stockholm by the School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health (at KTH).

Specialists in all aspects of molecular science and engineering are always in demand, and career prospects are strong. It is a very wide field, with areas including pharmaceuticals, life sciences, medicine and medical engineering, biotechnology, environmental technology, forensics, fine chemicals, consumer products, cosmetics, polymers, pulp and paper, food and agriculture, petroleum, mining and materials, microfabrication and energy. There is also an increased need for consultants with a specialist knowledge of patenting, scientific writing, venture capital and marketing, expertise for governmental bodies and authorities, as well as for PhDs within the area.

Other English Language Requirements: TOEFL (Paper-based) For English 6: Score of 4.5 (scale 1–6) in written test and a total score of 575.

A bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish bachelor's degree, or equivalent academic qualifications from an internationally recognised university, is required. Students who are following longer technical programmes, and have completed courses equivalent to a bachelor's degree, will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

English language proficiency equivalent to (the Swedish upper secondary school) English course B/6 is required. The requirement can be satisfied through a result equal to, or higher than, those stated in the following internationally recognised English tests:

  • TOEFL Paper-based: Score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) in written test, total score of 575.
  • TOEFL ITP is not accepted.
  • TOEFL iBT internet-based: Score of 20 (scale 0-30) in written test, total score of 90
  • IELTS Academic: A minimum overall mark of 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5
  • Cambridge ESOL: Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) Certificate in Advanced English or Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE) (Certificate of Proficiency in English)
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): Minimum score of 90
  • University of Michigan, ECPE (Examination for the certificate of Proficiency in English)
  • Pearson PTE Academic: Score of 62 (writing 61)

The language requirement can also be fulfilled through previous university and upper secondary school studies.
