Course Overview

This work-based, part-time course will help develop the knowledge and skills needed to become a confident and competent General Practice Nurse. Led by lecturers who continue to work in practice, our PGCert in General Practice Nursing is part of the Health Education England General Practice Nursing Training Programme.

Why study this subject?

Our PGCert in General Practice Nursing is aimed at Preceptors and experienced Nurses looking to transition into Primary Care.

We aim to empower you to learn the foundational knowledge needed to become a skilled General Practice Nurse (GPN) and an accountable member of your practice team.

What will I study?

On this programme, you'll be taught a range of clinical skills in general practice nursing, health promotion and screening as well as the management and assessment of long-term conditions.

Through consultation with other healthcare professionals, you'll consider issues relating to leadership and team working, accountability, quality and governance in order to develop in your role of the General Practice Nurse.

This course will cover:

  • the NHS Cervical Screening Programme
  • women and men’s – gender health
  • national immunisations programme and travel care
  • ear care
  • wound management
  • introduction to several long-term conditions
  • monitoring and management including:
    • asthma
    • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
    • rheumatoid arthritis
    • diabetes
    • dementia
    • cardiovascular disease
    • hypertension.

How will I be taught and assessed?

This course is delivered with a flexible distributed learning approach at both our Uxbridge and High Wycombe campuses, with intakes in both September and February.

The flexible delivery includes virtual / e-learning and face to face practical sessions, with practice based learning over six months.

What are my career prospects?

If you’re looking to progress to the role of Advanced Practitioner, then this master’s degree will help give you the skills and experience you need.

To help bolster your career prospects and enhance your skills further, you can choose to top up your Level 6 qualification and progress onto our MSc (Hons) Professional Practice (Healthcare) programme. You can also choose to study the Minor Illness short course, the Non-medical Prescribing short course or the MSc Advanced Clinical Practitioner programme.

Students require successful completion of a Bachelor degree with an overall pass or above from a UK NARIC-recognised institution.

This work-based course is aimed at nurses new to General Practice. You will need to be a qualified registered nurse and hold current professional registration on Part 1 of the Professional Register. You will also need to have evidence of having studied at Level 5 or 6. Ideally, you will be working in a general practice/primary care setting for a minimum of two days per week. It is a pre-requisite of the course that you have access to a mentor working in this setting to support you through the programme. IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with minimum of 6.0 in all areas. TOEFL iBT: 88 overall with minimum of 17 in Listening, 17 in Writing, 20 in Speaking and 18 in reading.
