These are the program objectives:

To prepare students to be effective researchers in biomathematics.
To provide an environment within which students can develop as professionals and become well-placed to move into academic, industrial or government employment
To enhance the visibility of the program at both national and international levels.

Objective: To prepare students to be effective researchers in biomathematics.

Students will perform independent research in a particular area of biomathematics, developing the expertise to make a substantial original contribution to that area.
Students will be able to work effectively with researchers from both mathematical and biological disciplines, demonstrating strong interdisciplinary skills.
Students will be able to review literature in a field, demonstrating a strong understanding of existing work gained from a careful study of it, and be able to explain both the biological context and the mathematical approaches that have previously been used.
Students will formulate and state a research problem, placing it within the context of existing work in the area, and be able to explain how addressing the problem will advance the field.
Students will be able to apply the methodologies needed to address problems in the student’s particular research area and be able to describe and explain these methodologies, both to specialists and non-specialists.
Students will effectively communicate research results, both orally and in writing, to audiences from both mathematical and biological backgrounds

Students will achieve a high level of expertise in their particular area of biomathematics, and the ability to apply this to research problems.
Students will be able to articulate the breadth of biological disciplines to which mathematical techniques can be applied in a way that demonstrates broad expertise across a number of these areas
Students will present research findings to national and international audiences via peer-reviewed publications.
Students will present research findings to local and national audiences, through both seminar and poster presentations, at professional meetings, both in the biomathematics field and in the relevant biological discipline, and at graduate seminars.
Students will participate in professional activities: attending meetings and workshops, refereeing papers, and joining professional societies.
Students will demonstrate a broadening of their professional skills: developing teaching skills, working with academic and/or industrial research groups, writing fellowship and grant proposals.

Objective: To enhance the visibility of the program at both national and international levels.

Program faculty are expected to recruit and retain high-quality students.
Program faculty are expected to enhance student support: increasing the number of students supported and increasing student stipends, providing new opportunities for travel to conferences and workshops. Pursue infrastructure grants as one means to achieve this.
Program faculty are expected to promote the cohesion of the program, co-locating students and faculty.
Program faculty are expected to recruit and retain research-active faculty who have highly productive publication records, and have significant external funding and resources to support graduate students.
Program faculty are expected to broaden the scope of the program by involving faculty from currently underserved research areas and by creating additional advanced-level courses.

To be considered for admission in full graduate standing, an applicant must have a four-year bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university as determined by a regional or general accrediting agency and must have at least a “B” (3.000/4.000) average in the undergraduate major or in the latest graduate degree program.

Provide Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a total score of at least 80 on the Internet-based Test (iBT). Minimum test scores for each section:

Listening: 18 points
Reading: 18 points
Writing: 18 points Speaking: 18 points for admission, 23 points for TA appointment where TA has direct verbal interactions with students, 26 points for TA appointment where TA presents lectures in the class or laboratory

The maximum total score for the iBT is 120 with each section worth 30 points.

Provide International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores with an overall band score of at least 6.5. Minimum test scores for each section are listed below:

Listening: 6.5
Reading: 6.5
Writing: 6.5
Speaking: 6.5 for admission, 7.0 for TA appointment

Computer-based TOEFL scores must be 213 or higher (with at least 17 on three sections and no section score below 13). The paper-based test requires a score of 550 or higher (with scores of 50 on at least two of the three sections and no section score below 45).
