Faculty from the department participate in the delivery of the PhD with a major in education. Concentrations and specializations are available in literacy studies concentration (specialization in children’s and young adult literature, ESL or literacy education); special education, deaf education, and interpreter education concentration; and teacher education concentration (specializations in cultural studies of educational foundations, early childhood education, elementary education, English education, mathematics education, science education, or social science education).

Students in the PhD concentrations share a common set of course requirements with graduate credit hours required as shown below. Doctoral committees may require students to take additional credit hours to fulfill degree requirements
Special Education, Deaf Education, and Interpreter Education Concentration
The Special Education, Deaf Education, and Interpreter Education concentration allows candidates to research a number of topics important to the education of or services for persons with disabilities.
Teacher Education Concentration
Teacher Education concentration offers specializations in Cultural Studies in Educational Foundations, Elementary Education, English Education, Mathematics Education, Science Education, and Social Science Education.

Applicants must have obtained a bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by the appropriate regional accrediting agency. A non-U.S. degree must be equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from the United States and must be accredited by its regional or national accreditation agency. Applicants with non-U.S. degrees must have earned a minimum of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or other equivalent to a ‘B’ average. If you have completed previous graduate coursework, you must have earned a minimum of 3.3 out of a possible 4.0 GPA or other equivalent to a ‘B+’ average.
An applicant requesting admission to the Graduate School may be required to submit results of the TOEFL or IELTS. Minimum score requirements for admission to the Graduate School are:
