UoL programmes offered in partnership with Recognised Training Centres in Malaysia are some of the most popular, including courses from the London School of Economics (LSE), University College London (UCL), and Queen Mary. There are eight amazing UoL facilities in Malaysia (broadly referred to in this profile as UoL Malaysia), and over 2,800 students are currently enrolled across the country.

UoL Malaysia tutors and lecturers are talented and award-winning, dedicated to giving students the best possible standard of education and proud to send graduates off to work in some of the biggest firms (based in Southeast Asia and the rest of the world).

International students can come to one of the UoL Malaysia programmes in person or attend through distance learning. Opportunities are flexible. There are lots of scholarships awarded, and postgraduate students can complete part-time courses, continuing to work while they study (and potentially benefitting from an employer study sponsorship).

There are Recognised Training Centres (RTCs) in Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, Penang and a handful of other rural areas in the country. All RTCs have a wide range of learning resources. UoL Malaysia libraries connect to the full archives of each RTC’s parent university, and study areas, laboratories and studios are available to support student progress.

The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming at every RTC. There are as many extracurricular options and experiences to enjoy as there are study facilities and lessons to learn. Students should find it easy to settle in, study and socialise no matter where in the world they’ve come from.

Academic and mental health support is always on offer to students 24 hours a day, and this support is available in-person and online. A wide range of accommodation options are available in Malaysia to suit different student budgets, and every option comes with helpful accommodation services staff who can answer any questions.

Teaching Quality

As a programme that combines resources from all 17 member institutions of the University of London, UoL Malaysia offers excellent teaching quality across all courses. Some of the best universities in the world have RTCs in Malaysia, including LSE, UCL and Queen Mary University.

Students can enjoy high quality teaching at an RTC or at home. The Centre for Online and Distance Education (CODE) staff work with lecturers and other faculty members to make every lesson as good as it can be, in the classroom and online.

Some of the most popular subjects to study through UoL in Malaysia include law, computing and information systems, as well as LSE-developed options like accounting and finance, banking and finance and economics and management. In fact, the UoL Malaysia undergraduate law degree is recognised internationally.

There are currently 2,800 students enrolled across UoL Malaysia’s RTCs, and the quality teaching on offer leads them to excellent career prospects after graduation. Lecturers are driven, focused and always willing to listen to student needs. It’s no surprise that so many UoL lecturers have been recognised for their important contributions to education. Whether in London or Malaysia, standards stay high (and graduate successes prove this).

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for undergraduate and postgraduate students who want to study at UoL Malaysia vary from course to course. There are some general university requirements for UoL, too, but these will be different depending on the student’s country of origin.

To give an example, if a student wants to study undergraduate law at an RTC in Malaysia, they’ll need a minimum of five SPM credits (including English) or their home country’s equivalent and two A Levels/STPM Principals/equivalent recognised diplomas.

Different requirements apply to postgraduates. Any student who wants to study the MSc course in professional accountancy at an RTC, for example, will need to share details of previous university qualifications and other professional achievements from a recognised accountancy body.

Students should make sure they’re familiar with all the university entry requirements that relate to them and their course before they apply for a UoL Malaysia programme. This includes English language requirements.

English Score Required

All the international programmes offered by UoL Malaysia are taught in English and ask students to have a good understanding of the language (in both written and spoken form). The specific English language score needed changes from course to course. For example, an undergraduate student wanting to study a Goldsmiths International Foundation Programme at the Asia e-University would be asked to provide one of the following:

  • Proof of a GCSE in English with a grade of C or above
  • Proof that they spent five years at an English-taught secondary school
  • A language skills test passed within the previous three years

There are lots of English language skills tests available and recognised by UoL, including the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Students need a minimum TOEFL online score of 75, with a minimum score of 18 in the reading and writing sections and a minimum score of 16 in the speaking and listening sections. For the IELTS, an overall band score of 5.5 is needed for admission, with no individual band score below 5.

A postgraduate student applying for the MSc in professional accountancy must either have passed an English version of their accountancy body qualification within the previous five years or be a current member of any professional body where the exams are done in English. They can also be eligible for entry if they have achieved a minimum score in one of several English language skill tests like the IELTS (minimum overall band score of 6.5 with at least a 6 in the written band).

Admission

The admission process for undergraduate students is the same no matter which programme they’re applying for at UoL, and the same general guidance applies for international students hoping to study at one of UoL’s Centres in Malaysia.

The first step is always completing the application form. This should be done a while before the deadline date, as early as possible, to give an applicant their best chance at getting a place. Applying for university admission will also come with an application fee (the exact fee will depend on the course that’s being applied for).

When an application is submitted and confirmed, it will be assigned an application number, and a request for supporting documents will be sent. These documents include proof of identity and proof of education. Though other specific documents might be requested, international students will generally need to share:

  • A copy of their passport
  • Transcripts of their academic achievements and relevant qualifications
  • Evidence of recent employment/academic scores, if applying via the Global MBA system

Postgraduate students are also required to supply scans of all their educational documents, evidence of their English language skills, references and a CV. To make the student admission process as quick and easy as possible, applicants should scan their supporting documents and send them in when they make their application. If they don’t, they’ll be asked to provide the documents later (as explained above).

The tuition fees for UoL Malaysia depend on a student’s place of study and their chosen course. For example, the total annual fee for a student studying the International Foundation Programme at the Asia e-University is GBP 2,324, while the total annual (and full, as the programme lasts a year) fee for an MSc in professional accountancy ranges from GBP 3,392 to 4,592.

Scholarships & Funding

There are several scholarships that students studying on one of UoL’s International Programmes in Malaysia can apply for. These scholarships vary in availability and total amount depending on the course a student is studying and the level that they’re studying at. Students are advised to understand the eligibility requirements fully before they apply.

As a Band A country, all new students in Malaysia are eligible for the Global MBA Five Year Anniversary Bursary. There is no application required, as students who are eligible are entered automatically. The bursary covers funding for up to 30 per cent of a student’s tuition fees, and it is only available to students enrolled in distance learning who are entering through the Global MBA network.

Students who are studying and working can apply for funding support in the form of employer sponsorship. If they apply, they should explain exactly what they need the money for and which fees it’s going to cover.

It’s also important that they understand how their employer defines learning needs and what their general policy on sponsorship is. Plus, potential future students should remember that employers are more likely to sponsor their employees’ studies if they can show how they will be useful at work and helpful to the company.

These cities contain lots of universities and lots of students, so they’re very student-friendly and exciting places to be. There is also a range of accommodation options available to UoL Malaysia students, though these depend on the RTC a student is studying at.

Accommodation

As mentioned, there are lots of accommodation options for international students. One of the best is the LiveIn facility at Mansion Sentral. It’s located in central Kuala Lumpur, so students staying there have great links to all the central city RTCs.

Mansion Sentral mainly offers twin sharing and single rooms costing between MYR 640 and 790 monthly. Students can also choose to rent entire suites, but these are popular and chosen quickly. The average cost of renting a full suite is MYR 3,640 monthly.

Students studying at the Advance Tertiary College in Penang can find university accommodation at the MyHostel Penang. It’s a cheap and exciting hostel, a place for community and shared living with lots of chances to socialise during studies. Group activities and workshops are even run out of the accommodation, so students have lots of chances to get to know their neighbours.

There are a few hotel and hostel options for students at SEGi College Sarawak, Kuching, and finding a safe, private room with good links to Kuching’s major attractions shouldn’t be too hard. UoL recommends that students research each RTC’s student house and accommodation options fully before making an application.

Student Support

In London, UoL has a range of great student support programmes and student services. In Malaysia, UoL still has a range of great student support programmes and student services. There’s student support available at every RTC in the country, and all students can also access a full programme of online support resources wherever they are in the world.

This online platform is called the VLE (Virtual Learning Environment), and it gives students everything from study guides and materials to career and employment resources. But the help doesn’t stop there.

One more great example of UoL Malaysia’s student support services is TalkCampus, a peer support programme that lets students help each other and access professional mental health services. Talking to a student guide or a trained advisor about mental, academic and cultural issues can be really helpful.

There’s also the Student Advice Centre, there for student questions and concerns from the application phase to the graduation phase. Overall, UoL Malaysia RTCs care about student safety and wellbeing, and wherever a student is in the exciting Asian country, they will be supported through their studies and given everything they need to succeed.
