The Department of Cell Biology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, offers graduate programs leading to the PhD degrees in cell biology. The Department provides a world-class training environment in a range of areas including organelle biogenesis and disease, neurobiology, virology, cancer apoptosis and signal transduction, proteomics, molecular evolution, RNA biology, chaperones and pathogen-host interactions. Through an independent research program, complemented by seminars and formal coursework, students are trained to identify important problems, critically analyze scientific information and effectively communicate their results.
The Department of Cell Biology is endowed with state of the art equipment needed to perform experimental work in modern cell biology. Research funding is primarily from agencies such as the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Canada Foundation for Innovation.

Students are required to complete a minimum of 9 in graded graduate courses and a thesis.

Registration in 900-level THES.
PhD students must prepare and successfully defend a thesis acceptable to their Doctoral Thesis Examination Committee, presenting the results of original research conducted by the student. Students must submit a thesis for preapproval by the supervisory committee prior to submission to the examination committee
Length of Program
The time required to complete the PhD program will vary according to the previous training of the applicant and the nature of the research undertaken. Typically, graduate students that change program category from the MSc to the PhD program are expected to complete their studies in five years while those entering the PhD program directly are expected to complete their studies in four years.
The maximum time to complete the PhD program as set by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is six years.

The Department's minimum admission requirements are an undergraduate degree with an admission GPA of at least 3.3 on the 4-point scale from the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution.
Throughout their program, students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 with no individual grade less than B.
English Language Proficiency:
The deadline for submitting applications for admission is June 1 for September admission and October 1 for January admission.
