This is a flexible program that can be designed by a student and an advisor to meet personal educational goals and interests that may or may not include graduate study. The program may be used to meet a set of specific requirements; for example, certification for teaching at the secondary school level. Students in this major are qualified for a wide array of positions working in the biological sciences.

Learning Outcomes

• Students should have the ability to demonstrate a fundamental level of academic competence in core biological content and issue knowledge.
• Students should be able to present biological information orally.
• Students should be able to competently critique biological literature.
• Students should be able to utilize biological literature to examine scientific questions.
• Students should have the ability to demonstrate competence in biological writing.
• A student should have the ability to understand basic biological experimental design and quantitative methods.
• A student should have the ability to apply biological knowledge to current topics.

Oral Communication Requirement:

To satisfy the oral communication requirement for the B.A. or B.S. degree in Biology or the B.S. degree in Marine Biology a student must successfully complete either BIO 495 or BIOL 495.

Applied Learning Requirement:

To satisfy the applied learning requirement for the B.A. or B.S. degree in Biology or the B.S. degree in Marine Biology a student must successfully complete one of the following: honors in any science department (BIO 499, CHM 499, EVS 499, GLY 499, MAT 499, PSY 499, PHY 499); directed individual study involving hands-on experience in any science department (BIO 291, BIO 491, BIO 495, CHM 491, EVS 491, GLY 491, MAT 491, PSY 491, PHY 491); BIO 498, BIO 493; formal student teaching experience taken for UNCW credit (e.g. EDNL 406, EDN 409, EDN 411); BIO 480 or BIOL 495.
