What three tips would you give to students who want to study at Waikato?

- Use the library to see if you prescribed book are available online. This may save you hundreds! - Most faculties may offer to provide you with one on one help if you need it free of charge. Use these resources to boost your performance if you feel like you need it. - Joining clubs will give you interesting perks such as discounts at university cafes. This will also connect you with interesting people as well as give you the opportunity to practice a new hobby!

1. Check for the entry requirement to see what you need to be accepted 2. Check for available scholarship for you and try to apply for it. Don’t think you not good enough, you can do it! 💪 3. If you are an international student, please prepare your application plan as soon as possible, don’t wait too close to the deadline because you need to apply for visa too and it takes quite long to get it 😅

1. Before you come to the University of Waikato, do some research on the university's various majors, and try to find one that suits you or that interests you.🤩 2. It is also important to understand the services and facilities that the University of Waikato has to offer students, which means the convenience of university life in the future. What advice would you give to your first-year self?

Time management is the most important skill a university student can have. Use it wisely to balance the different aspects of your life such as work, study and leisure. Make a good impression in your first year and you might be offered well paid positions to help your lecturers in your subsequent years.

Compared to second and third year, first year has less workload so it is the best year to make more friends and get involved in uni as much as you can. So, I would advise to make the most of my first year by being active in uni life by joining various clubs and societies.

The biggest advice is not to pack so many clothes. At first, I thought shopping in Hamilton would be inconvenient. After I came here, I found that there are a lot of well-developed and convenient shopping malls. 😆😆😆 Next, I will try my best to participate in activities organized by the university to expand my interpersonal communication and practice my oral English.😊 Finally, I think the most important thing is confidence. During my first year at the University of Waikato, I was very unsure of myself and thought it would be difficult for me to follow the course in time.However, I actually accepted the teaching methods of the University of Waikato very well and did not have any major learning problems.Therefore, I think it is very important to enhance the self-confidence. ⁽⁽٩(๑˃̶͈̀ ᗨ ˂̶͈́)۶⁾⁾

What's the best thing about your course?

My course is quite stimulating and very much hands on. Most papers have some form of practical component where I get to apply what I’ve learned. Moreover, many of the projects I got to work on have been very realistic and it feels like you are truly getting trained for industry which definitely comes in handy when the time comes to look for an internship!

The best thing is that I have a chance to learn a lot of great knowledge, meet new friends (just by doing a lot of group work) and I get a lot of support from the tutors, friendly staff and amazing facilities of uni (library, computer rooms everywhere and ready to be used)!

How does University embrace cultural diversity?

The university embraces cultural diversity in many ways but some of them are by organising cultural events and workshops such as a cultural week where many cultural clubs here on campus take part and show their culture. The university also supports the formation of cultural clubs and events organised by the clubs as they provide a space for students to celebrate their cultural heritage, share traditions and connect with others of similar background.

What five things should every international student bring with them when studying abroad?
B Eng (Hon) in Mechanical Engineering
For me personally, I think the most important things to bring with me is my electronic devices, important documents(passport, identification card and international driving license). About the license, it is important to bring a physical one especially if you want to convert to NZ license. Another is if you have personally medicine, I have an medicine balm that I always had it when I have stomachache.

There are a lot of things to do in Hamilton. You can go to the park or Hamilton Gardens for fresh air or enjoying a walk. You can also go shopping at three big malls: Centre Place, Chartwell and The Base (my favourite) and there are always buses to take you there cheaply and safely :)

The Hamilton Campus has three halls of residence: Bryant Hall, College Hall and Orchard Park. Self catered and catered options are available. Also, the university does help you if you would prefer a homestay and you can also rent a private flat. In your experience, what do you think the campus culture is like?

The campus culture is laid back and chill but at the same time everyone gets their work done. That is perfect as students can be seen sitting by the lake and catching up with friends and also at the same time the library is always open for students to sit down for a quiet time of study. The culture at uni is flexible and suits everyone.

I think the campus culture is very vibrant. There are students from different cultures studying in most classes where we can can meet and interact. Besides classes, there are also a lot of culture festival or celebration are held every year by the waikato student union (wsu) and other organisations or cultural clubs in the university.

The University of Waikato is fortunate to have strong relations with the local iwi (maori for tribe) and it shows throught how vibrant the maori culture is on campus. Between activies organised by various clubs and the administration, there is always something underway that provide the opportunity for students to explore the roots of the local culture in some way or another. Te Reo Maori (the Maori language) has a significant presence in official functions as well as a casual presence across the campus which personally allowed me to pick up a few words here and there (yes, I'm quite proud). Moreover, the shear number of international students on campus make it so that everyday feels different. You might hear a new language, learn about a country you never heard before via a friend or partake in cultural exchanges promoted by the numerous cultural clubs on campus. The beautiful thing in my opinion is that this cultural ecosystem is backed by the student union which show how important diversity is at the university. All in all, if you are looking to experience other cultures or share yours, the university has got you covered.

What food and cuisine have you tried and what is your favourite?

Cause im vegetarian, im quite limited in the new dishes i can try, however since being in New Zealand, i have tried new things bagels, aioli dip and NZ classic Kumara Pie! Im especially a big fan of the coffee in NZ! Id suggest everyone try out the pies here and give coffee a chance even if you’re a tea person.
