The University of Glasgow is offering 4 Sanctuary PhD Scholarships (1 per College) for PhD applicants to the University, with Refugee or Asylum Seeker status. This scholarship is open to prospective PhD students in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Glasgow applying for commencing their PhDs in October 2026. Please note you must have applied to a relevant PhD programme within the College of Arts and Humanities before submitting an application for this scholarship.

The scholarship will meet the cost of tuition fees for the minimum duration of your programme. The College of Arts and Humanities Sanctuary PhD Scholarship also provides a £5,000 per year stipend, to assist with study costs.

Applicants must:

currently be located in the United Kingdom and be eligible for Home or Rest of UK (RUK) fee status;

recipients must be able to be based within commutable distance to the UofG Campus at which they will be registered. This Scholarship cannot be awarded to undertake a PhD by Distance;

have lodged an application to a PhD programme within the College of Arts and Humanities
note that only PhD programmes are eligible - other Doctorate or Research Masters programmes are not eligible.
note that only full-time study is eligible – applications for part-time study cannot be considered.

AND

have submitted a claim for Asylum in the UK OR are actively appealing a negative decision on a claim for aslyum in the UK OR have been granted Refugee Status, Humantarian Protection (HP) or Discretionary Leave (DL) by the Home Office, as a result of an asylum claim

OR

have come to the United Kingdom through schemes such as:

UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS)
Afghan citizens Resettlement Scheme
Afghan Relcoations and Assisitance Policy (ARAP)
Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme (VPRS)
Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme (Homes for Ukraine)

In order to be considered for this scholarship you must:

 Apply for a PhD within the College of Arts and Humanities as soon as possible. 

Please indicate in the funding section of your admission application that you will be applying for the 'Sanctuary PhD Scholarship'.

All applicants must also complete the CoAH Sanctuary PhD Scholarship application via the Scholarships Application Portal.
