Mathematics is the science of structure, order and relation. It deals with logical quantitative reasoning. Statistics is the science and art of data collection and analysis. It deals with estimation, hypothesis testing and decision making. At StFX, you may undertake studies that focus on either or both fields. With small class sizes and a personal environment that maximizes individual attention, as a StFX Mathematics and Statistics student, you will be well educated for further success in graduate studies, education programs and industry. Typical first-year course schedules include an introduction to differential and integral calculus, which provides you with an understanding of and appreciation for the mathematics of change. The calculus courses are taken in combination with courses from the sciences and the arts.Job opportunities include work in education, insurance, banking, finance, pharmaceutical companies, market research, and academia. English 12, Pre-Calculus 12 or Calculus 12, two of (Biology 12, Chemistry 12, Computer Science 12 or Computer Programming 12, Environmental Science 12 or Geology 12, Physics 12) and one other university preparatory course. For high school students, the minimum admission requirements include an overall average of 70% in Grade 12, with no grade below 65%, in each of the required subjects. Admissions to limited enrolment programs is competitive, meeting the minimum average does not guarantee admission. Please note, students who are currently in grade 12, applying for early admission, must have the program requirements in grade 11, and be registered in the program prerequisites in grade 12, to be eligible for an early offer. Otherwise, offers will be made after receipt of final first term grade 12 transcript.
