The University of Otago College of Education offers a range of primary teaching programme qualifications for people who want to teach in primary and intermediate schools in New Zealand and overseas. Graduates of these well established and highly regarded programmes will be qualified primary school teachers.A three-year undergraduate degree programme for those who do not hold a degree. The BTchg endorsed in Primary Education features contemporary theory, curriculum knowledge and in-class experience, enabling graduates to teach in primary and intermediate schools.

Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities), on the advice of the Dean, College of Education, who must be satisfied that, in accordance with Education and Training Act 2020 Section 255(5) (a) and (b), the applicant satisfies the minimum requirements for admission to an initial teacher education programme as specified by the relevant professional body..

We recognise many other qualifications as equivalent to the New Zealand qualification for entrance.

We also accept the following international qualifications:

International Baccalaureate: IB Diploma with a minimum of 24 points.
Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) GCE Advanced Levels: minimum Numerical Score of 8
