Plants are more than just the foundation of terrestrial ecosystems they are essential for human survival. They provide our oxygen, food, materials and medicines, engineer our soils, and play a key role in regulating climate by absorbing carbon dioxide. As global challenges intensify, from climate variability to resource scarcity, the role of plant science becomes ever more important. Now is an exciting time to be a plant scientist. If you want to learn more and help to make the world better, this degree programme is for you.**Be at the forefront of innovation**On this degree programme, you will study the incredible diversity of plant life, ranging from single-celled algae to liverworts, flowering plants and crops. You will explore topics including how plants evolved, how they sense time, how they defend themselves and how they can be transformed into biotechnological tools. You will shape your studies to match your interests, whether you are drawn to fieldwork or laboratory research.* At the molecular level, you will learn about plant genetics, biochemistry, metabolism and signalling.* At the whole organism level, you will discover how plants grow and respond to their environment, and learn how modern biotechnology can develop high-yielding, resilient crop varieties.* In the environment, you will investigate how plants interact with their environment and explore plant diversity across different habitats.**Diverse research topics**Our strong international reputation for plant science is built on cutting-edge research ranging from fundamental plant biology to innovative agricultural solutions. The academic staff who teach your courses are world leaders in their field, working to develop science-based solutions to some of the biggest challenges in plant science.Research topics include:* solving mysteries about the earliest plant ancestors that grew millions of years ago* unique insights into plant growth and development that are paving the way to climate- and disease-resilient crops to feed the world’s rapidly growing population**Collaborative opportunities and real-world experience**Our enthusiasm for plant sciences is reflected in our strong research and teaching links with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Scotland’s Rural College and over 600 other plant scientists locally through Edinburgh Plant Science.Your final year project could be based at one of these research institutes in our network, giving you valuable real-world experience and a chance to apply your skills.**Programme benefits*** Study on a flexible programme. Explore different areas of biological sciences before specialising in the later years of your degree programme.* Learn in state-of-the-art laboratories, interactive computing studio facilities and collaborative lecture theatres, ensuring a dynamic and immersive study experience.* Experience hands-on learning with fieldwork at local sites such as the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.* Gain key skills valued by employers such as communication, collaboration, problem solving and data analysis.* We have a strong international reputation for plant science research and offer many research opportunities, including an independent research project in your final year.
