Program Description
The undergraduate English major (consisting of five options: Literature, Creative Writing, Subject Matter, FYI and JYI, and Honors) is designed for students who desire to concentrate in one of the different fields subsumed under the broader category of English. Students are required to choose one of these options at the time they declare their English major. The English Subject Matter Program for the Single Subject Credential option prepares students for a career in teaching English at the middle school and/or high school level. This option meets the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing subject matter requirements for the English Single Subject Credential.
Student Learning Outcomes
Students will: Demonstrate critical reading skills; Demonstrate effective writing skills; Demonstrate knowledge of creative, literary, linguistic and/or rhetorical theories; Analyze British and American cultural, historical and literary texts; Analyze culturally diverse texts.

Students will: Demonstrate their knowledge of the nature and structure of the English language and of its relationship to other human languages; Apply rhetorical and composition theory; Demonstrate fluency in the discourses pertaining to the disciplines of English.

You will be considered for admission to CSUN if you meet the following requirements: You have earned a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 grading scale, or an average of "B" grades on an "A - F" letter grading scale. (CSUN will convert your international GPA when you apply for admission.)

IELTS Academic - International English Language Test System: 6.0 or higher
iTEP Academic - International Test of English Proficiency: 5.0 or higher
PTE Academic - Pearson’s Test of English: 45 or higher
TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language: Internet Based score: 61; Paper-based score: 500
