The Bachelor of Arts in English degree at the University of Tampa offers students the option of pursuing courses for pre-professional (law) preparation, careers in business and service fields, a traditional literature degree in preparation for graduate school, or teacher certification in English education. Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in English degree at the University of Tampa obtain a foundation in the critical study of literature and language. Students explore enduring questions about identity, difference, culture, and social change as expressed in literary texts and in cutting-edge approaches to scholarship. Our courses in language and literary study reflect the research interests of our faculty in diverse areas such as ecocriticism, global Anglophone writing, critical race studies, postcolonial theory, and medieval and early modern cultures. By finding their scholarly interests and forging their path, English majors develop a knowledge of the history of literature, gain a sharp eye to the aesthetic details of language, develop their critical faculties, and gain extensive experience as communicators and writers, all skills in demand in the professional world and in graduate study. Students benefit from small class sizes that facilitate open dialogue, collaborative projects, and faculty feedback.
