As a doctoral student in the Applied Biology Ph.D. program at UMass Lowell, you will receive rigorous training in research, dedicated mentorship and the skills needed to succeed in a variety of careers. Our faculty research spans the full breadth of biology, providing you with an interdisciplinary approach and a variety of innovative methods. In addition to a dissertation advisor, you will assemble a thesis committee of three additional faculty to develop a broad mentoring network.   • Statement of Purpose: Outline goals, experience and achievements (maximum 2 pages).
  • Letters of Recommendation: Two (2) for master's, three (3) for doctoral applicants.
  • Transcripts: You may apply with unofficial transcripts, but if accepted, official transcripts are required. We do not accept opened, photocopied, emailed PDFs or faxed official transcripts. First year and transfer students must show evidence of having earned a Bachelors or Masters degree in Biology or a related discipline (e.g., Biochemistry, Botany, Environmental Biology, Marine Biology, Zoology) with a minimum 3.000 GPA. International applicants must have earned a comparable degree and GPA as verified by the Center for Educational Documentation (CED). A Masters degree with evidence of a strong background in biology may be used in lieu of a degree in Biology or a related discipline for students who earned their undergraduate degree in a different field of science or engineering.
  • Personal Statement: A personal statement must be submitted that describes the students educational background, research experience, and career goals. The student must identify at least two potential PIs in the statement. Applicants will be strongly encouraged to have established contact with their potential advisors before applying. Particular attention will be given to students who have research experience and display a commitment to pursuing excellence in science.
  • Test Scores: UMass Lowells school code is 3911. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are only required for the following programs:
    • Medical Physics and Radiological Sciences.
    • All materials must be received before your application is reviewed. To add documents before review, log in and select “Program Materials.”

International Applicants

A transcript evaluation is required for the M.S. in Biological Sciences and Ph.D. in Applied Biology.

International transcripts must indicate completion of a four-year bachelors degree (equivalent of an American bachelor's degree) before an application will be processed. The Office of Graduate Admissions reserves the right to have any application credentials evaluated. Baccalaureate verification may be obtained for a fee from:
