The Doctor of Philosophy in English is designed to meet the needs of future scholars and writers. The program requires all candidates to have broad knowledge of English and American literature, acquaintance with non-traditional literature, practical and/or theoretical background in the teaching of English, and a specialization in one or more of the discipline’s fields-literature, creative writing, and English education.

A resume or curriculum vitae CV is required please submit within the online application systemThe GRE is not requiredThis program requires three recommendations Please send email requests for such recommendations from within the online systemSubmit a 750 word essay about why you wish to undertake graduate study and which key experiences have shaped your decision You may reflect upon ideas texts and modes of study that inspire you and discuss your plans for pursuing them Please use the essay to highlight important aspects of your applicationIf applying for graduate assistantship complete the following narrative and submit within the online applicationIf you have taught before write a 700 to 1000word essay explaining your teaching philosophy and experience If you have not taught write a 500word essay in which you imagine your own approach to teachingAn official transcript from the institution from which you received your bachelor degree is required as well as a transcript from the institutions where any additional graduate level courses or degrees have been taken completed Applicants are not required to submit an official transcript of courses taken completed at WMU
