Geophysics at Stony Brook University integrates seismology, geodesy, geodynamics, geophysical imaging, and Earth system observations to investigate processes occurring from Earth’s deep interior to its surface and cryosphere. Faculty and students combine field observations, laboratory measurements, numerical modeling, remote sensing, and data science to address fundamental questions related to earthquakes, tectonics, groundwater, glaciers, environmental change, and planetary-scale Earth dynamics. Graduate students work closely with faculty on research that spans observational geophysics, geophysical instrumentation, quantitative modeling, inverse theory, machine learning, and autonomous sensing technologies. The program provides opportunities to design and deploy next-generation geophysical instruments, conduct fieldwork in environments ranging from Long Island to Antarctica, and analyze large geophysical datasets using modern computational and artificial intelligence approaches.
