English majors find their coursework to be both practical and pleasurable, an appropriate mix of traditional and contemporary classes that span the breadth of English studies. Students interested in earning Illinois Professional Educator Licensure (grades 9-12) must complete the English major (Bachelor of Arts) with a major concentration in Secondary English Language Arts (SELA), including SIUE's two-year Secondary Education program. Students are assisted by College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) advisors in the CAS Advising office and by School of Education, Health, and Human Services (SEHHB) advisors in SEHHB Student Services.An overall GPA of 2.5 is required for admission to the Secondary Education program. In addition, English majors with a major concentration in Secondary English Language Arts must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA in English courses. GPAs will be calculated based on all courses taken at all institutions. No course with a grade of less than C will be applied to meet professional educator licensure requirements.Students seeking an Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) must meet specific general education and professional education requirements and must pass State of Illinois licensure tests.
