The College of Education at CSULB is a learning and teaching community that prepares professional educators and practitioners who promote equity and excellence in diverse urban settings through effective pedagogy, evidence-based practices, collaboration, leadership, innovation, scholarship, and advocacy.The College provides undergraduate, credential and graduate studies in education through four departments - Liberal Studies, Educational Leadership, Teacher Education, and Advanced Studies in Education and Counseling - and one university-wide program - the Single Subject Credential Program. Curriculum in college programs focuses on the preparation of personnel for teaching and educational service in pre-school settings, elementary, middle and high schools, community colleges, adult programs, and other educational or community agencies. Descriptions that include prerequisites and requirements for each credential, certificate, and degree program are listed in this catalog in the department that houses the particular program. General doctoral program information is also included at the end of this section.Curriculum and Instruction is a pair of master’s programs - one for elementary teachers and one for secondary teachers - designed to help teachers advance their knowledge and skills in curriculum design, classroom-based instruction and assessment strategies and to prepare for curriculum leadership roles in K-6 or 6-12 schools respectively. Coursework prepares teachers to apply theoretical insights and research findings to the practical problems they encounter in their work as classroom teachers.Pathway 2 is designed for non-credentialed teachers who work in a private school or internationally and do not have a teaching credential. These students also complete 6 fully online core classes (18 units) as well as an additional 4 classes (12 units) that support their educational interests to reach the 30 unit minimum required for the degree. Students may finish the program in three or four semesters and the additional 4 classes are offered in a combination of online, hybrid and in-person instruction.
