Master of Science in Chemistry - Sustainable and Green Chemistry

Our faculty members are highly dedicated, experienced teachers and researchers. Many have established interdisciplinary collaborations with colleagues in other units on campus, such as the Frontier Institute for Research in Sensor Technologies (FIRST), the Forest Bioproducts Research Institute (FBRI), the Institute for Molecular Biophysics, the Maine Center for Research in STEM Education and the Sustainability Solutions Initiative. Teams of UMaine faculty, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students are researching biomass conversion and sensors for detection of environmental pollutants teaching with analogies in the chemistry lab studying new methods to identify biomarkers for cancer, miniature devices for applications from genomics and cell biology to catalyst screening for biofuel production. Specific areas of research and the associated faculty are listed below.Sustainable and Green ChemistrySustainable and green chemistry explores the use of non-petroleum feedstocks to create chemicals and looks to implement the principles of green chemistry in synthesis. Researchers are exploring new synthesis pathways, new catalysis, new materials, and understanding the complex nature of natural sources of molecules and materials.
