Our Biomedical Engineering PhD course gives you the chance to employ cutting-edge science to make new discoveries that will contribute to solving medical problems with engineering tools. The Centre for Biomedical Engineering at the University of Surrey provides world-class research into key areas such as biomedical signal processing, machine learning applications for healthcare, and biomechanics. We have links with globally leading companies, as well as charities and hospitals across the south of England. We also have an extensive network of international research collaborators. The quality of our Biomedical Engineering postgraduate students’ research has been recognised by national professional bodies, including first prize in a prestigious Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) competition and runner-up in the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Healthcare Technologies Student and Early Career Awards 2021. Our graduates have gone on to clinical engineering positions in the NHS, design consultancies, medicine and prosthesis manufacturing clinical scientist roles in biomedical engineering research and development companies and research associate positions in academia, and other areas. In the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, the University of Surrey ranks 15th in the UK for research power for engineering and top 20 in the UK for the overall quality of research outputs (research papers and other published works).
