Why this course?
Training to become an English teacher gives you the opportunity to share your passion for the subject, inspiring and shaping the lives of your students.
Teaching English at Secondary level gives you the opportunity to share your passion for your degree subject, open the hearts and minds of your students to new experiences and to develop in them a love of language and literature. You’ll also develop their key literacy skills such as reading, writing, talking and listening which play an integral role in learning across the curriculum.
Careers
A degree in education will equip you for a range of careers working with children and young people.
Most of our PGDE graduates go on to work as teachers in secondary schools across the country. Learn more about what happens after your PGDE.
Secondary School Teachers in Scotland use the Curriculum for Excellence framework. They work with their class to develop skills and abilities, and encourage the pupils to expand their knowledge and understanding further.

Degree requirements
An ordinary degree, or international equivalent.
Degree must include:
At least 80 SCQF credits in English. 40 of these SCQF credit points must be in Literature (this could include texts translated into English.
A maximum of 40 SCQF credit points can be taken from any of the following areas:
Media Studies
Film
Creative Writing
Journalism
English Language
Advertising
Law
Maths & English
Higher (SCQF Level 6) English Grade C or above
National 5 (SCQF Level 5) Mathematics Grade C or above
Maths and English qualifications can be in progress at the time of application.
