Train as a doctor at our School of Medicine in Chelmsford, and get hands-on experience of patient care in hospitals, GP surgeries and community settings in this five-year medicine course. As a medical student at ARU, you’ll have use of our cutting-edge skills laboratories and ARU Anatomy Centre. Our experienced tutors include consultants, surgeons, nurses and GPs – and they’re joined by visiting clinicians from NHS Trusts.But you won’t just learn on campus. Placements start early and continue throughout your course. You’ll get experience in primary and acute care settings, and in specialist medical centres.There’s a genuine need for qualified medical professionals and, as a doctor, you’ll be ready to build a bright future for yourself – and your patients. To become a doctor in the UK you need a General Medical Council-approved Medical degree. For historical reasons different institutions give their degrees different names: you might graduate as a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery with the letters MBBCh, MBChB, MBChirB, MBBS or a few other options after your name. It does not matter which you choose, they are equivalent and enable you to progress into the next stage of your training (a foundation programme then GP or specialty training). The GMC-approved degree from ARU is an MBChB.We have an integrated modern curriculum, where you’ll be on placement in primary and secondary care from the early months of your course. You’ll be given a robust foundation in the clinical sciences combined with clinical experience, leadership, quality improvement, innovation and technology for health.Your training for clinical experience will include placements in primary care, mental health, five acute care providers and tertiary units in Essex, such as the St Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns and the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre. On campus teaching will take place in our cutting-edge, purpose-built School of Medicine, fitted out with the latest laboratory equipment and cadaveric anatomy suite.

A Levels AAA at A Level taken within two academic years prior to the time of application, to include Chemistry or Biology and one of either Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics. For the third A Level*, please note that we do not accept General Studies and Critical Thinking. For Biology, Chemistry and Physics A Levels, we require a pass in the practical element. A Level resit grades at AAA will be accepted taken within two academic years prior to the time of application. First A Level Biology; and Chemistry or Physics or Maths; and any* third A Level First A Level Chemistry; and Biology or Physics or Maths; and any* third A Level GCSEs A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade A*-B (9-6) required including English Language, Maths and two science subjects. Scottish Qualifications Advanced Highers: ABB from Scottish Advanced Highers with grades AB to come from Biology and/or Chemistry and another science subject. We also require National 5 Grade B or above or GCSE in English Language and Maths. Highers: AAAAA at Higher Grade including Biology and/or Chemistry and another science subject. We also require National 5 Grade B or above or GCSE grade B (5) or above in English Language, two science subjects and Maths. Must be taken within two academic years prior to the year of entry. International Baccalaureate A minimum of 36 points is accepted. 666 at Higher Level in Biology and/or Chemistry plus one other science and including Mathematics or English. Must be taken within two academic years prior to the year of entry. Irish Leaving Certificate Three Higher level subjects at H1 including Biology or Chemistry. Three Higher level subjects at minimum H2 including Chemistry or Maths or Physics or Biology. Must be taken within two academic years prior to the year of entry.
