Certificates of Achievement in Medical Coding

The Medical Coding Program is designed for students to become coding specialists with demonstrated knowledge and skills in applications of classifications and nomenclatures to health information. Coding with approved classification systems is required for direct patient care, research, and reimbursement. Graduates of the program may apply to take a national certification exam given by the American Health Information Management Association. Credentials that can be earned are the:Certified Coding Associate (CCA),Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), orCertified Coding Specialist - Physician Based (CCS-P)The Medical Coding Program is limited entry so students must attend a Health Sciences Orientation, meet with a Health Programs Advisor, and complete the limited entry workshop.Student Learning OutcomesRead, interpret, and analyze information from all types of health records to determine proper diagnostic and procedural code assignment.Assign and evaluate diagnostic and procedural medical codes and groupings for all clinical diagnoses and procedures according to current guidelines and regulations and conduct physician queries when needed for clarification.Utilize health information management (HIM) systems, such as EHR (electronic health record), encoders, and computer-assisted coding (CAC) software in a secure manner to manage documentation required for medical coding and billing.
