The department offers the B.A. program in French Studies. The core of the major is the study of French and Francophone literatures and cultures through innovative textual, visual and interdisciplinary approaches.

Major Requirements

Lower-division requirements (12 units plus language proficiency)

French 001, 002, 003, 004, 15a, and 15b or the equivalent proficiency. Students may pass out of some or all of the lower-division language courses for the French major through previous coursework or by taking a language proficiency exam.

Four (4) units: FREN 054

Eight (8) units: CPLT 001 or CPLT 001W, CPLT 002

Upper-division requirements (48 units)

Sixteen (12) units: FREN 101A, FREN 101B, FREN 101C

Eight courses (32 units) of upper-division electives in the French Program. Of these the student must choose a minimum of five courses (20 units) offered entirely in French. Students may petition to take one course (4 units) outside of the French Program on a related topic. It is strongly encouraged that students take at least one class focusing on a time period earlier than 1800. It is highly recommended that students complete FREN 101B and FREN 101C before enrolling in upper-division electives.

Four (4) units: CPLT 193, Senior Capstone Seminar (CPLT 196 strongly recommended but not required)

To meet minimum requirements to be considered for UCR selection, you must earn a minimum GPA of 3.4 on a 4.0 scale (equivalent to an 85 percent on a 100 percent scale). The assessment of a qualifying GPA is based on “a–g” courses (required high school/secondary classes) completed in years 10 and 11. If the high school/secondary school offers a different curriculum, your academic achievement will be based on that educational system’s grading scale.

English Language proficiency

You can demonstrate proficiency by meeting any of the following exam benchmarks. Keep in mind that you must complete one of these exams by December of your final year of high school/secondary school.

Score 3, 4 or 5 on the AP examination in English Language and Composition, or English Literature and Composition

Score 6 or 7 on the IB Standard Level examination in English (Language A only)

Score 5, 6 or 7 on the IB Higher Level examination in English (Language A only)

Score 6.5 or higher on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination: Internet-based test (iBT): Minimum score of 80 or better; Paper-delivered test: Minimum score of 60 or better.

Duolingo English Test (DET): Minimum score of 115
